Turbo Charge your Canvassing Skills!

By Jane Bernstein, Co-leader Madtown Os Neighborhood Action Team -

In a recent TV interview, WisDems Chair Ben Wikler, talking about how Democrats plan to win what is certain to be a nail-bitingly close election in Wisconsin in 2024, explained that the race will be decided by a “margin of effort.” In other words, the side that works the hardest, wins.  Challenge accepted! Let’s go!!  Whether you are brand new to canvassing or an old hand, here are…

Five Ways to Turbo-Charge Your Canvassing Skills this Spring and Summer

(exact dates tbd)

  1. Build experience talking to voters by doing a Bridge Building Canvass. We love bridge building canvasses because, instead of asking voters for their vote, we take the time to talk with voters about the issues they care about most. These canvasses are low stakes opportunities to listen and learn and have quality conversations. They’re a great way to build your confidence knocking on doors while gathering important information that the WisDems use to craft their messaging and identify Democratic voters.
  1. Learn new Messaging Strategies at our Messaging and Canvassing Training  To be honest, we don’t have the time we need before a canvass shift to fully train canvassers before they hit the doors.  Come to our in-depth training session to learn and practice messaging strategies for talking to voters. They might also come in handy when talking with family and friends too.
  1. Become an expert on all things voting at our Voter Education Training  How many times have you canvassed a voter who needs more information about their polling place, voter registration, early voting dates, etc?  Get trained by the best – Madison City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl – on registering voters so you can more confidently answer voting questions at the doors. The training will also prepare you to join LWVDC registration events or host your own.
  1. Bookmark our *new and improved* website so you can check it frequently, stay up to date on all that we are doing, and access the voting and canvassing resources and news articles that will help you be a prepared and knowledgeable canvasser.
  1. Recruit your friends to join you on a canvass. Everything’s better with friends. You’ll probably cover more territory and have fun too. Then you’ll canvass again.  And the more you canvass, the more skilled and confident you become.
